Healthcare
providers take certain steps for patients being treated for pneumonia. These steps have been shown to produce the best recovery and
reduce readmissions to the hospital.

Patients who are diagnosed with pneumonia should
- Have a blood culture performed within 24 hours prior to or 24 hours after their arrival in the Critical Care Unit
- Have a blood culture taken before receiving antibiotics, if antibiotics are given in a hospital emergency department
- Receive antibiotics that are consistent with their severity of illness and the area of the hospital they are admitted to
