Heart Failure

Healthcare providers take certain steps for patients being treated for heart failure. These steps have been shown to produce the best recovery and reduce readmissions to the hospital.

You can view data for most hospitals in the United States at www.medicare.gov/hopsitalcompare/.

Patients who are diagnosed with heart failure should

  • Receive written instructions or educational material on their condition and how to manage it
  • Be evaluated for left ventricular systolic (LVS) function before arrival, during hospitalization, or after discharge
  • Be prescribed an angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor or angiotensin receptor blocker (ARB) if needed
